Holy Redeemer School

Academics

We offer a quality educational program from kindergarten through eighth grade. Our school is built around a strong academic curriculum and offers a wide variety of activities that challenge the mind and the body of our students.

Curriculum

Religion: Daily religion classes, daily prayer, weekly Masses, and regular reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation are all vital aspects of our religion curriculum. Our second grade students receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist for the first time. Service is an essential element of our students' education as each class collects money and items for Operation Christmas Child, reaches out to residents in the nursing homes, gives time and talent to Heart to Heart, makes prayer chains for those in need and much, much more!

Language Arts: In addition to a structured phonics program (Saxon), literature, grammar and writing, we also help our fourth through eighth grade students develop into lifelong readers with the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program. Using individualized goals and reading levels, our students select books and then take comprehension tests on those books to earn points or rewards. We also have annual visits from an author or illustrator and encourage students to share their writing talents by entering local writing contests.

Math: Our Saxon math curriculum offered in kindergarten through third grade builds on itself, reinforcing concepts and skills already learned as it spirals to the next level of learning. Math homework is frequent so students have significant opportunities to practice their skills. The Pearson/Prentice Hall math series used by our fourth through eighth grade students challenges and prepares them for math at the high school level.

Science: Our science program challenges students through hands on activities, experiments, reading and discussions. The thorough in-depth study of the scientific method helps to prepare our fourth and sixth graders for the projects they develop for our annual Science Fair held in February.

Social Studies: Our social studies curriculum focuses on understanding history, geography, economics, civics and other cultures. The sixth grade focuses on Minnesota History and travel to visit the State Capital, the St. Paul Cathedral and other sites pertaining to the history of our state. Junior Achievement volunteers also come into the classroom and provide real-life lessons for our elementary classes.

Music: Our students in grades K-5 have music every other day. The students perform a program for Christmas and early spring. Our fourth graders learn to read music by playing the recorder, preparing them to join our 5 - 8 band. Choir is also offered to students in grades 5-8 who wish to expand their vocal music abilities.

Physical Education: Our elementary students have physical education every other day. The President's Fitness Challenge is part of this curriculum. As part of a long-standing tradition our seventh and eighth grade students participate in a Track & Field Day every spring.

Computer Literacy: Holy Redeemer School has over 80 computers, all with Internet access. Students participate in weekly computer classes that focus on keyboarding and general computer skills, Internet research and safety procedures, PowerPoint presentations, and more.

Foreign Language: Instruction on the Spanish language and culture is provided to all students. Experiences include learning vocabulary, listening to and interpreting conversations and celebrating cultural events such as Las Posadas. All of these experiences enrich our students' lives as members of God's diverse world.

Art: All students receive art instruction from a licensed art teacher weekly along with the art experiences provided by the classroom teacher. When volunteers are available the Art Adventure program is also offered.
